The Fort Madison School Board is considering a project that would involve repairing a portion of the school’s roof and installing a large number of solar panels.
Board members listened to a presentation from Michael Mohrfeld, president of Fort Madison-based Mohrfeld Solar, who outlined how solar energy could be generated at the high school campus.
Mohrfeld noted that his company has completed several projects throughout the region, including work in Keokuk, Wapello, and at SCC, as well as for Lee County offices and Lee County Conservation.
He also shared that similar proposals were recently presented to Central Lee earlier this month. Mohrfeld explained that tax credits encouraging power purchase agreements between contractors and local government entities are scheduled to expire on June 30. In order to benefit from the cost savings tied to those incentives, he said construction would need to begin before that deadline.
