Burlington’s coin dealers say they’ve seen an increase in activity thanks to high gold and silver prices. Midwest Coin on Roosevelt Avenue and Laws Antiques and Jewelry on Jefferson both tell the Hawk Eye that the process of selling precious metals is becoming complicated, with smelters backed up significantly and changing how and when they pay for received precious metals. Smelters previously paid upon receipt of the metals, but now will not send payment until the metal is melted down, meaning the price quoted at the retailer may not be the price the consumer sees.
