The trial begins today for a Burlington woman accused of stabbing her cousin to death in March of last year. 50-year-old Tisha Renee Bounds, 50, was arrested by the Burlington Police Department and charged with first-degree murder for the stabbing death of her cousin, 33-year-old Derius Lashaun Moore, 33, of Chicago.
Police were called to an apartment in the 300 block of Angular Street around 4:58 p.m. on March 1, 2025, after receiving a report of an unresponsive man who had been stabbed. Officers arrived to find Moore with what appeared to be a single stab wound.
Moore was taken by ambulance to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
Bounds was also at the apartment when officers arrived, according to court documents. Investigators spoke with several witnesses who said an argument occurred inside the apartment before Bounds went into the kitchen, retrieved a knife, walked over to Moore, and stabbed him in the upper left back.
Bounds entered a not guilty plea in April 2025. The trial was originally scheduled for October but was later delayed.
