A bill advancing in the Iowa legislature could strip away the responsibility of townships in the state. The Pen City Current reports that Lee County Supervisor Garry Seyb brought the bill up during his supervisor report this week, saying that it would completely get rid of the position of township trustee. Right now, townships in Iowa are responsible for mowing cemeteries, settling fencing disputes, but most importantly: fire and rescue service. The counties themselves would take over those duties under the bill. State Sen. Jeff Reichman said it’s been the legislature’s priority to streamline government, and that needs to be done at the local level.
