Fort Madison police say a man was taken into custody Sunday evening after allegedly pointing a handgun at an officer and barricading himself inside a residence, prompting a multi-agency response and neighborhood evacuations.

According to the Fort Madison Police Department it happened around 5:10 p.m. on February 15 at a home in the 2100 block of Avenue L. While officers were on scene for a civil standby in which a homeowner was collecting personal belongings from the home when 41-year-old Philip Hansen reportedly entered a back room, brandished a pistol, and aimed it at an officer before barricading himself in a bedroom.

After more than two hours of negotiations, officers obtained a search warrant. The Lee County Special Response Team and the Iowa State Patrol Tactical Team deployed less-lethal chemical agents inside the residence, after which Hansen surrendered without further incident. Hansen was transported to the Lee County Jail and charged with Assault on a Peace Officer While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon. He is being held on a $10,000 cash-only bond.
