Lee County officials took a formal step toward determining the future of the county’s court facilities on Tuesday, a decision that could ultimately result in consolidating operations in Keokuk or constructing a brand-new courthouse.

During their meeting Tuesday morning, the Lee County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve a proposal for an assessment study of the South Lee County Courthouse in Keokuk. The study will be conducted by Carl A. Nelson & Company of Burlington.

County leaders say the assessment will play a key role in evaluating several possible paths forward. The study is intended to help determine whether all operations currently housed at the North Lee County Courthouse in Fort Madison could be relocated to the Keokuk courthouse, whether renovations would be necessary to accommodate such a move, or whether building a new courthouse would be the more practical long-term solution.
