A Southeast Iowa school is earning international recognition for its focus on student leadership.

Central Lee Middle School in Donnellson has received Lighthouse Certification from FranklinCovey.

Superintendent Andy Crozier says only about five percent of schools worldwide earn that distinction.

The certification recognizes schools that successfully implement the “Leader in Me” framework with both staff and students. The program is based on Stephen Covey’s book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.

Administrators say the framework encourages students to take ownership of their academic performance and step into leadership roles, whether that’s in the classroom, at school assemblies, during events, or through community service projects.

District leaders say the recognition reflects a school-wide commitment to building confidence, responsibility, and leadership skills in students.
