Burlington officials are gathering public input as they consider the future of the swimming pool at Dankwardt Park, which has been closed for the past two years.
City Development and Parks and Recreation Director Eric Tysland says the more than 50-year-old pool has reached the end of its useful life due to aging infrastructure and ongoing maintenance problems.
Tysland says the pool’s mechanical systems, filtration equipment, and underground piping are all more than five decades old. Before the facility closed, it was also losing an estimated 10,000 gallons of water per day because of liner and leakage issues.
To help determine the next step, the city has hired JEO Consulting Group to evaluate options and guide the planning process.
As part of that work, the firm presented a conceptual design showing what a full aquatic center with multiple features could look like. That concept carries an estimated price tag of about $12 million.
City officials say they want community feedback before deciding what should replace the aging facility.
