The Iowa Army Ammunition plant is halting production for a “proactive safety review”.

That’s according to an announcement made Thursday, the same day employees were reportedly evacuated from the facility. Officials call it a precautionary step to allow a team of experts to thoroughly assess on-site storage procedures and ensure that all safety protocols are being met.

Access to the site will be restricted.

Employees told the Pen City Current that they were sent home abruptly Thursday around mid-day, which the Des Moines County Sheriff’s office said was out of an “abundance of caution”.
