You can expect a relatively quiet spring flood season this year.

That’s according to the National Weather Service office in the Quad Cities. They say most of the region is facing a below-normal risk of flooding through early summer.

In its final Spring Flood Outlook issued March 12, the NWS says widespread flooding is not expected across eastern Iowa, including areas along the Mississippi River.

Dry conditions and limited snowpack are key factors behind the reduced risk, along with ongoing drought and below-normal stream flows.

For river communities like Burlington, Iowa, Keokuk, Iowa, and Fort Madison, Iowa, the Mississippi River currently has less than a 50 percent chance of reaching flood stage this spring.

However, forecasters caution the risk is not zero and could change depending on future weather conditions.
