The Fort Madison Community School District has approved a roof replacement project at the high school as part of a larger plan to transition to solar energy.
The Pen City Current reports that the project is tied to a new agreement with Red Lion Renewables, which will install solar panels at the high school, central office, and football field parking lot.
Red Lion CEO Terry Dvorak said the district has been paying some of the highest energy rates in the state through Alliant Energy, and the solar project is expected to save about $44,000 annually.
Solar panels will not be installed at the elementary school, as its newer design already includes energy efficiencies that limit potential savings.
Before installation can begin, a section of the high school roof must be replaced. Construction must start by the end of June for the project to qualify for federal tax credits.
Under the agreement, Red Lion Renewables will install, own, and maintain the solar infrastructure, while the district will purchase the generated electricity through a 20-year power purchase agreement.
