The Fort Madison City Council is considering a new ordinance to regulate open burning within the city.

The Daily Democrat reports City Manager Laura Liegois and Chad Hannum told council members the Fort Madison Fire Department has long had concerns about the lack of clear rules for outdoor burning.

The proposed ordinance would establish definitions for various types of fires and materials, including backyard burning, landscape waste, garbage, and ceremonial fires.

It would also set guidelines for seasonal leaf burning and give the fire chief authority to create a permit system, restrict burning during hazardous weather conditions, and suspend burning privileges when necessary.
