A town hall in Donnellson drew about 75 residents and officials to discuss proposed legislation in the Iowa Legislature that could reshape township government. Organized by Lee County Supervisor Garry Seyb, the meeting was attended by State Sen. Jeff Reichman, who said a policing bill has stalled and a bill that would dissolve township governments in the state is unlikely to advance, noting the broader goal was to streamline services and reduce government overlap.
Local officials pushed back, emphasizing that Lee County’s 16 townships operate efficiently on a combined $860,000 budget while supporting fire services and other local needs. Concerns were raised that shifting those responsibilities to the county could strain resources, particularly for emergency services, while also reducing local control.
