The City of Burlington has named its next police chief.

City Manager Chad Bird announced Thursday that he has selected Wayne Thomson to lead the Burlington Police Department. Thomson currently serves as Deputy Chief and brings more than 28 years of experience with the department.

Throughout his career, Thomson has held a number of leadership roles, including Lieutenant in Patrol, Investigations, and Administration, as well as Sergeant, Detective, and Patrol Officer. Officials say his experience spans major criminal investigations, training, policy development, budgeting, and community engagement.

A lifelong Burlington resident, Thomson is expected to officially take the role following approval at an upcoming city council meeting and after he returns from attending the FBI National Academy. His appointment follows the pending retirement of current Police Chief Adam Schaefer.
