The West Burlington City Council is weighing possible changes to its urban chicken ordinance and is asking residents for input before making a decision.
The Hawk Eye reports City Administrator Gregg Mandsager presented examples from other Iowa communities and a draft policy during Wednesday’s meeting. Currently, residents can raise chickens with a permit, though city staff recommend prohibiting the practice altogether. Council support appears split, with Councilor Andy Crowner siding with staff, saying farm animals “belong on the farm.”
City officials say only one resident currently holds a permit, though unpermitted chickens have led to nuisance complaints.
