A trial date has been set for a Mount Pleasant man accused of a fatal shooting at a Burlington bar last month.
Kaysean A. Rice, 23, is charged with second-degree murder and other offenses in connection with the death of 19-year-old Janae Elizabeth Osier. Rice pleaded not guilty on April 3. His pretrial conference is scheduled for May 18 at the Des Moines County Courthouse, with the trial set to begin June 9.
According to the Burlington Police Department, officers responded around 11:20 p.m. March 7 to Chavy’s Bar and Grill for a report of a shooting. Osier was found with a gunshot wound and transported to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center, where she later died. Investigators say she identified “Kaysean” as the shooter before losing consciousness.
Witnesses told police a fight broke out inside the bar and a single shot was fired. Several identified Rice as the person who had the gun. Authorities say he later admitted firing a shot but claimed it was meant as a warning.
