Illinois Republicans renewed their push to change the SAFE-T Act, which ended cash bail in the state. KWQC-TV reports the push came after two Chicago police officers were shot by a felon who was on pretrial release. House Minority Leader Tony McCombie said the law is not working the way Democrats promised. McCombie said Republicans have introduced about 41 bills to fix issues in the law. Two amendments to the Pretrial Fairness Act, would require someone who is arrested for a felony while on pretrial release for another felony to be held in custody until both cases are resolved, Senate Minority Leader John Curran said. Democrats argued the Pretrial Fairness Act corrects a system where wealth determined whether someone remained in jail while awaiting trial.
