The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board has received a complaint against Assistant Des Moines County Attorney Trent Henkelvig, alleging he improperly used county resources to support his campaign for county attorney.
Henkelvig is running in the June 2 Republican primary to replace retiring Des Moines County Attorney Lisa Schaefer.
The complaint was filed by Henkelvig’s opponent, Travis Inghram. It alleges Henkelvig used his county-issued email account and computer for campaign-related business, including podcast appearances and promotion, through April 2.
It also alleges that Henkelvig used his time during a Des Moines County Board of Supervisors meeting to circulate petitions for his candidacy. Ingrham stated in the complaint that it appears “all” of Henkelvig’s campaign has been in violation of Iowa election law.
The complaint will appear on the board’s May 20 agenda where they will decide whether the allegations warrant a formal investigation by ethics staff.
