Iowa is expanding efforts to combat human trafficking through new requirements for commercial truck drivers.

A bill signed into law by Kim Reynolds will require anyone applying for a commercial driver’s license in Iowa to complete a 30-minute training course on human trafficking awareness.

The course is intended to help truck drivers recognize warning signs of trafficking, understand how to safely respond, and know how to report suspected cases to authorities.

State officials say truck drivers are often in positions where they may witness suspicious activity while traveling and can play an important role in identifying and preventing human trafficking.
