Gas prices are expected to remain a major concern for summer travelers, according to a new survey and forecast from GasBuddy, which projects fuel costs could reach some of the highest levels seen in years.

GasBuddy forecasts the national average price for gasoline will hit $4.48 per gallon by Memorial Day, up from $3.14 a year ago. The company also projects gas prices could average $4.80 per gallon between Memorial Day and Labor Day, with prices potentially rising above $5 per gallon if disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz continue.

Even with higher costs, summer travel plans remain strong. The survey found 56% of Americans still plan to take road trips lasting more than two hours, although that figure is down from 69% last year. Among those traveling, 38% expect to drive more than five hours to reach their destinations.
