Southeastern Community College has named John McVey as its next athletic director. McVey officially takes over June 1, succeeding Athletic Director Joe O’Brien, who is retiring July 1 after nearly three years leading the college’s athletics department.
McVey joined SCC in 2014 as a volunteer assistant baseball coach and most recently served as residence life coordinator and assistant baseball coach. SCC President Dr. Michael Ash said McVey’s commitment to the college and experience building successful programs made him the right choice to lead the department. Ash also credited O’Brien with helping establish a strong foundation for continued growth.
McVey will oversee an athletics program that has expanded significantly over the past decade and now includes 19 men’s and women’s sports. He says one of his goals is to build on that momentum by strengthening ties between SCC athletics, the campus, and the surrounding community, while also highlighting the success stories of student-athletes both during and after their time at the college.
