Seven people are dead following a series of shootings in Muscatine on Monday, including the man authorities say was responsible. Muscatine Police responded to a report of a shooting around 12:15 p.m. and found four people at a home who had been fatally shot.
Investigators identified the suspect as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland of Muscatine. Police say officers later located McFarland on the riverfront trail near the pedestrian bridge. As officers confronted him, authorities say McFarland took his own life. During the investigation, police discovered two additional victims, one at a home and another at a business.
Muscatine Police believe the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute and say all of the victims are believed to be family members of McFarland. The Muscatine Community School District announced Monday evening that two of the victims were students and two others were district employees. The investigation remains ongoing.
