Illinois has adopted new regulations aimed at increasing oversight of the most powerful artificial intelligence systems. Governor JB Pritzker signed the Artificial Intelligence Safety Measures Act on Monday, saying the state is acting because Congress has not established nationwide standards.
The new law applies to the largest AI developers whose models generate more than $500 million in annual revenue and are trained using massive computing power. It requires companies to publish safety plans explaining how they identify and manage catastrophic risks, including the potential for AI to assist with cyberattacks or the creation of chemical, biological or nuclear weapons.
The law also requires developers to notify the state within 72 hours of discovering a potentially harmful incident, or within 24 hours if there is an imminent risk of death or serious injury.
