Burlington city leaders are reviewing privacy concerns surrounding the city’s 12 Flock license plate-reading cameras after a resident raised questions at Monday’s City Council meeting. The Hawk Eye reports Noah Hoth questioned how information collected by the cameras is used and shared. Mayor Jon Billups said the cameras capture vehicle and license plate information, not faces, and that data is stored for 30 days and shared with other law enforcement agencies. Billups said officers must provide a case number and badge number when searching the system.
Billups said the cameras have helped police apprehend a murder suspect, make 20 other arrests, recover four stolen vehicles and assist the drug task force. He said the city is reviewing its local safeguards and could make changes if necessary.
