A citywide boil order is now in effect in Monmouth, Illinois, and is expected to remain in place until Wednesday, September second. The order applies to all municipal water customers, who are being told to boil tap water before using it. The city lost two wells earlier this month after a lightning strike, and the remaining well serving the south water treatment plant failed Sunday.
City Administrator Lou Leone says crews are working to bring one of the lightning-damaged wells back online as quickly as possible. The city is awaiting test results from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency and hopes to know by about 10 Wednesday morning whether the boil order can be lifted.
