Des Moines, Ia (KHQA) — An Iowa Senate committee on Thursday approved a proposal that would make the honeybee the official state insect.
Right now, Iowa and Michigan are the two states that don’t have an official insect.
4,500 Iowa beekeepers manage 45,000 colonies of honey bees and produce over four million pounds of honey annually, according to supporters of the joint resolution.
The measure survived a key deadline that comes at the end of the week; now the proposal moves to the full Iowa Senate for a floor vote.
