Keokuk, IA-  Keokuk voters have rejected a school bond issue that would have allowed Keokuk schools to take out a $19 million bond for school improvements.

TV station KHQA reports that the result of the vote on Tuesday, September 14th, was 608 votes against the bond versus 367 in favor of it.

School officials wanted to use the money for various improvements, including expanding and upgrading the high school, renovations for the district stadium, and expansion of Hawthorne Elementary.

Residents would have seen a tax increase of around $1 per $1,000 of taxable value if the measure had passed.
