Burlington, IA-  The winner of an open seat on the West Burlington School Board was decided Tuesday, by having their name drawn from a bucket.

At Tuesday’s Des Moines County Board of Supervisors meeting, write-in candidate Vanessa Johnson had her name drawn by County Supervisor Shane McCampbell, making her the winner of the vacant seat.

Johnson and Mary Storch, a former West Burlington School District Secretary, both received six write-in votes in the November 2nd election.

The Hawk Eye reports that Iowa law dictates that a tie in votes for public office be settled by official election canvassers writing names on pieces of paper, and publicly drawing a name out of some kind of receptacle.

Johnson will replace West Burlington School Board member Pam Dodds.
