Burlington, IA-  The Des Moines County Health Department will soon begin offering COVID-19 vaccines to children ages 5 to 11.

The Hawk Eye reports that parents and guardians can begin scheduling appointments Thursday, with the first appointments available on November 18th.   Walk ins will also be accepted.

Des Moines County Public Health Director Christa Poggemiller said that a parent or guardian will have to be present for any child 16 and under to receive a vaccine.

This news comes two weeks after the Pfizer vaccine was given emergency approval by the FDA, as well as approval by the CDC for use on children ages 5 to 11.

About 280,000 children in Iowa are now eligible for the vaccine.  For more information, contact Des Moines County Public Health at (319) 753-8290
