The candidates for the 2022 United States Senate election are beginning their campaigns. There is one seat up for election that is currently held by Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, who is running for re-election at the age of 88. The Democratic candidates for the US Senate election are Abby Finkenauer, Michael Franken, and Glenn Hurst.
Finkenauer has served in both state and national legislature positions, most recently as an Iowa representative for the first congressional district of Iowa. She is the youngest woman to get a bill passed in the House of Representatives. The bill covered support for small businesses and Finkenauer was also one of the first women to ever represent Iowa in the House. Her main campaign issues include being a champion for quality healthcare, quality education, and Iowa’s working families. She lives with her husband Daniel in Cedar Rapids.
Michael Franken is a former United States Navy Vice Admiral. He served in the US Navy for 36 years and has declared his intention to unseat Chuck Grassley from the US Senate for Iowa. He’s cited his intention to bring Iowans together and mend the divisiveness in the state. Franken has voiced a determination for strong leadership in Iowa as well as a focus on national security.
Dr. Glenn Hurst has served Iowa as a rural doctor for many years. Hurst’s campaign issues include Medicare for All, improving Iowa’s job market, increasing climate change efforts, and investing in rural Iowa. He has been particularly outspoken about the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on seniors and has sat on various committees like the Democratic Rural Caucus, the Minden City Council, and even the 3rd Congressional District Central Committee. The primary election will occur on June 7th of 2022 with the general election happening on November 8th.
