Des Moines, IA- Iowa doctors are now banned from providing gender transition treatment to minors.
Radio Iowa reports that Governor Reynolds signed a bill into law that took effect immediately, which made it illegal to prescribe puberty blockers or perform gender transition surgery on anyone under the age of 18.
Reynolds told reporters earlier this week that she believes the science isn’t there to support gender transitions for children.
“These are irreversible,” Reynolds says. “…Unfortunately these kids don’t get a redo. It’s done.”
Minors in the state who have already begun gender transition care in Iowa have 180 days to end their treatment. The governor of Minnesota has issued an executive order indicating Iowa doctors could refer minors who are in treatment to Minnesota.
Governor Reynolds also signed another bill that requires Iowa K through 12 students to use the locker room or bathroom that corresponds with the gender on their birth certificate.
