Burlington, IA-  The Burlington City Council is set to approve a settlement between the city and multiple pharmacies that distributed opioids.

The Hawk Eye reports that the council is expected to sign on to a multi-billion dollar settlement, which includes Walgreens, CVS, and Walmart as well as pharmaceutical companies Allergan and Teva.

The total settlements from the five companies total about $20 billion over 15 years.  The state of Iowa will receive a portion of the settlement, and both Burlington and Des Moines County will get a portion of those funds.

The settlement allows cities and counties with over 10,000 residents to receive funds for education about opioids, as well as initiatives to prevent opioid abuse.
