Authorities recover missing man’s body from Mississippi River

Nauvoo, Ill.-  The Hancock County Sheriff’s Office says the body of a man who went missing on the Mississippi River Tuesday has been found.

According to a news release, on Tuesday, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a tipped-over canoe and a man in the water on the Mississippi River at Highway 18 and County Road 1720 North.

Deputies responded along with Hamilton Police, Nauvoo Fire and Rescue, Hamilton Fire Department, Hancock County EMS, Illinois Conservation Police, and AirEvac.

The victim, later identified as 69-year-old Ronald G. McVeigh of rural Nauvoo, Illinois unfortunately drowned.

Illinois Conservation Police and the Lee County Sheriff’s Office began recovery efforts.  The Quincy Emergency Volunteer Corps joined the recovery efforts later that evening.

McVeigh was located and recovered at 11:30 AM Wednesday, April 12th by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, Quincy Emergency Volunteer Corps, and Illinois Conservation Police.

They were assisted by the Hancock County Coroner.
