Fort Madison, IA-  The Fort Madison Community School District has announced that, due to extreme heat, the start of classes has been delayed until Monday, August 28th.

According to a news release, heat indices are projected to be over 100 degrees, and due to the district’s two elementary buildings not having air conditioning, the district is pushing the school start date back to when temperatures are safer indoors for students and staff.

The first day of school for Fort Madison PK-12 students will be Monday, August 28th.  Orientation for 4th graders and freshmen only will be held Friday, August 25th as originally scheduled from 8:30 to 11:30 AM.

Orientation for kindergarten will be included in regular activities on Monday.

A revised calendar will be discussed moving forward and will be released once the school year is underway.
