Davenport, IA- Spectators lined the Mississippi riverfront early Sunday to see the demolition of the former Interstate 74 bridge.
Radio Iowa reports that the western spans of the former I74 bridge were blown up by a demolition team back in June, and this weekend, it was the eastern towers and cables that finally fell, after weeks of careful work by that same team.
The detonation time was set for 7 AM on a Sunday to have the least impact on road and river traffic, and hundreds of people came out before sunrise to get a good spot to see the bridge’s final demise. Some waited for hours, and the tall green towers were gone in just seconds.
The new, billion-dollar I-74 bridge opened in 2021 between Bettendorf, Iowa and Moline, Illinois. Its graceful white arches are featured on a new postage stamp that was released just last week.
