Des Moines, IA-  A bill in the Iowa House would require public school students to stand and sing the national anthem daily.

TV Station KCRG reports that the proposed bill, which cleared a House subcommittee on a 2 to 1 vote, would require students in grades 1 through 12 to sing the national anthem once a day, and for social studies classes to teach the history and meaning of the anthem.

Students who are physically able would be required to “stand at attention” and “remove any headdress not being worn for religious purposes.”

Private schools would not be required to implement the mandate if the bill becomes law.
