Greenfield hospital reopens some services following tornado

Greenfield, IA-  The hospital in Greenfield is now offering some services as it continues to rebuild following severe damage from an EF-4 tornado that went through the town on May 21st.

Radio Iowa reports that the tornado didn’t hit the Adair County Memorial Hospital directly, but high winds and flying debris caused enough damage that it closed and relocated many services to the Nodaway Valley Elementary School.

Hospital CEO Catherine Hillestad says outpatient and specialty clinics were reopened Monday.

“Our radiology is temporarily located in our public health office, so we had to relocate our public health office into our clinic,” she says. “Our lab is operating out of a procedure room in the clinic, so we do have the availability for lab tests and such.”

Hillestad says the hospital is still working towards reopening the emergency room and resuming inpatient services.

“EMS service is still operating. So if a patient does have a medical emergency, they can still call 911, our EMS service will then transfer the patient to the hospital of their choice,” Hillestad says.

Work continues on rebuilding the EMS garage, and they hope to have it rebuilt by the summer or fall of 2025.
