Iowa’s task force reviewing Area Education Agencies (AEAs) has postponed its recommendations to February, citing the need for more data on operations and spending from the state’s nine AEAs. The group was initially expected to report findings by year-end.
Under Iowa’s new AEA law, school districts gain control over general education and media funding, plus 10% of special education funding, with AEAs retaining 90%. However, concerns about service reductions, especially in rural areas, remain unresolved.
Efforts to delay special education changes failed during Monday’s meeting, with proponents like Pam Gronau arguing the law increases flexibility for schools without cutting funding. Critics, including Mediapolis Superintendent Adam Magliari, warned of negative impacts on students.
State Rep. Brent Siegrist acknowledged rural concerns but expressed confidence the funding adjustments will stabilize, emphasizing the governor’s strong backing for the law.
