University of Iowa Students Propose Solutions for Trails, Housing, and Flooding in West Burlington

wb

University of Iowa graduate students presented proposals to the West Burlington City Council addressing challenges with pedestrian safety, housing development, and stormwater runoff. The plans were developed through the university’s Sustainable Communities Initiative, in collaboration with West Burlington and Burlington.

Key proposals included a $746,200 trail system along Agency Street to improve pedestrian and cyclist access to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center and Southeastern Community College, a $1.7 million to $10 million plan to mitigate stormwater flooding near Luers Park through methods ranging from bioretention ponds to dredging Isaac Walton Lake, and a $3.6 million housing development with 38 single-family lots near Deery Brothers.

Future presentations will further explore shared services and operations between West Burlington and Burlington.
