Lee County supervisors approved several construction-related purchases aimed at improving road safety and infrastructure. Among the approvals was a $54,775 contract for a temporary traffic signal system from Horizon Signal. County Engineer Ben Hull said the system will enhance safety during roadwork by allowing for automated lane closures, reducing the need for personnel in high-risk areas. The system will be shared with Des Moines County through an existing agreement, and $50,000 of the cost is covered by a state Traffic Safety Improvement Program grant.
Supervisors also greenlit $66,124 for repairs to three county bridges to address potholes and surface deterioration. Additionally, $20,970 was approved for long-delayed repairs to the J50 BNSF rail crossing, supported by federal grant funding and shared among the Iowa DOT, the county, and BNSF.
