Severe thunderstorms swept across southeast Iowa and western Illinois on Tuesday evening, causing extensive damage, power outages, and travel disruptions throughout the region. At the peak of the storm, approximately 20,000 customers lost power, including nearly 15,000 in the Quad Cities alone. High winds toppled more than 40 utility poles, downed large trees, and damaged several buildings. In Lee County, an empty freight train derailed northwest of Fort Madison, temporarily halting rail traffic, but fortunately resulting in no injuries.
Crews from across the region are continuing efforts to restore electricity and clear roadways, with utility workers, emergency responders, and cleanup teams working around the clock to assist communities still impacted by the storm.
