The man accused of killing former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband and wounding Senator John Hoffman and his wife is now in custody. Vance Boelter, 44, surrendered Sunday after a two-day manhunt in rural Sibley County, southwest of Minneapolis near his home.
Boelter faces two counts each of murder and attempted murder. Authorities say he posed as a police officer, used a fake patrol car, and targeted the lawmakers at their homes early Saturday.
A former evangelical nonprofit leader and state workforce board member, Boelter reportedly compiled a list of 70 targets, mainly pro-abortion rights advocates and lawmakers. Hoffman, who remains hospitalized after nine gunshot wounds, is expected to recover, with his wife calling their survival “incredibly lucky.”
