Burlington’s forestry department is working to restore the city’s tree canopy, which has declined 10-15% due to aging trees, disease, and storm damage, including 150 trees lost to a major storm in August 2024.
A recent study with the Iowa DNR confirmed the trend, especially after an outbreak of Emerald Ash Borer. In response, the city now plants about 150 trees annually, focusing on species diversity to prevent future losses.
Officials plan to continue work with property owners to select site-appropriate trees. Right-of-way planting requires at least 10 feet of space and a clear public benefit.
No single species now makes up more than 10% of the urban forest, with a goal of lowering that to 5%. A public tree planting is set for October 18 at Dankwardt Park.
