A business organization in western Illinois is alerting the public about counterfeit $100 bills circulating in the area.

The Macomb Area Chamber of Commerce said Tuesday that a local bank contacted them after discovering two fake $100 bills in its night deposit. The deposits were made over the weekend and originated from two different businesses.

According to bank officials, both counterfeit bills were from the 1974 series issued by the Federal Bank of Chicago, and each carried the same serial number.

The chamber is advising businesses in Macomb and the surrounding area to carefully examine any $100 bills they accept.

The Burlington IA Police Department is also alerting the public about counterfeit bills. “We’ve recently seen an increase in reports involving suspected counterfeit bills in the area. In multiple cases, the bills share serial numbers and pen markings.”

If you believe you’ve received counterfeit currency, or have knowledge about this activity, please contact your local Law Enforcement Agency and do not attempt to use the bill.
