Democrats in the Iowa House have unveiled a proposal aimed at addressing the state’s water quality concerns. The plan, known as the Healthy Water Act, includes five policy measures designed to protect Iowa’s rivers and lakes, which currently rank among the highest in the nation for nitrate pollution.
The legislation would allocate $600,000 to restore funding for a water monitoring program that is set to shut down in July after losing financial support during the 2023 legislative session. In addition, lawmakers are seeking to triple funding for Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy, which offers farmers tax credits for participating in nutrient management practices outlined in the program.
