A Burlington businessman is looking to set up a demonstration site for America’s first ever system that converts plastic waste to diesel fuel. Jonathan Hazell, chief executive officer of Great River Fuels, Inc., spoke to the Burlington City Council on Monday about leasing the city-owned property at 1106 Washington Street to demonstrate that system. Hazell said securing control of the site through a six-month lease is necessary to showcase the technology to potential investors. If the initial demonstration proves successful, he plans to pursue the purchase of the former GE/ABB facility on Agency Street to scale up the operation. He says two investor groups have already expressed interest in the project. The plastics are melted into a soup-like material before additives are introduced to create fuel.
