A large Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is now fully operational in Southeast Iowa.

Alliant Energy’s battery energy storage facility in Wever can store electricity generated by nearby renewable resources.

Construction on the project began last May. The facility includes nearly 130 battery containers capable of storing about 99 megawatts of energy — enough to serve approximately 100,000 homes.

The system can capture electricity produced by the adjacent solar field as well as other sources such as wind energy, then release that power to the grid when demand is high.

The facility is expected to operate for about 20 years and will be monitored around the clock, allowing operators to respond immediately if necessary.
