The Burlington City Council is making changes to their annual spring clean-up.

The Hawk Eye reports that the council voted to eliminate the traditional city-wide spring clean-up program and replace it with a year-round bulky item pickup service during their meeting on Tuesday. The previous clean-up events were conducted over a six-week period in March and April, while the new program will be available throughout the year.

Under the updated system, residents with oversized items must contact the city’s public works department to schedule a pickup. Each household will be eligible for three free pickups annually, with any additional collections requiring the purchase of a garbage tag.

Public Works Director Nick MacGregor said the change was driven by recurring issues with the former program. He noted that items often remained at the curb for extended periods, sometimes for weeks, which led to scavenging, neighborhood concerns, and the accumulation of materials not intended for clean-up collection.

The bulky item pickup program is expected to be activated on the city’s website in the near future.
