The Des Moines County Board of Supervisors approved three percent raises for county elected officials, except for themselves during a regular meeting of the board Tuesday.
But an eight percent raise for the county attorney’s office was denied by the board.
The Hawk Eye reports Supervisor Jim Cary said that after supporting an 18-percent increase for the office last year, he could not justify an additional eight percent this year. Supervisor Tom Broeker agreed. Chairman Shane McCampbell added that he would have been open to a four-percent raise for the department’s staff attorneys.
Assistant County Attorney Trent Henkelvig told the board the office is working to align its salaries with those of neighboring counties and prevent staff from leaving for higher-paying positions elsewhere.
