The Lee County Board of Supervisors is reviewing employee overpayments tied to inconsistencies in internal pay scales.

The Pen City Current reports the issue led to tense discussion during a recent meeting, with Board Chair Ginger Knisley briefly gavelling the session back to order after a back-and-forth between Roslyn Garcia from the Lee County Attorney’s Office and Human Resources Director Karin Wehmeyer over Iowa Code and county policy.

Wehmeyer told supervisors that two employees had been overpaid. The total overpayment was one-thousand-941 dollars and 65 cents.

The mistake was discovered during an investigation into pay scales at Lee County EMS. Officials say the employees were not required to repay the money because the error was not identified right away, and the overpayments were still within the department’s overall payroll budget. A resolution was passed to that effect.
